Love is as Essential as Food and Water

Did you know that love is essential for people to experience good physical health? To love is one of the most natural biological and psychological emotional behaviors of human beings. Love is comprised of many biological and neurological chemicals, physiological reactions and psychological elements, all working together as nature designed to ensure that human beings become attracted to one another, enjoy sexual intimacy and form lasting bonds. Without this complex system leading to what we identify as love, human beings would cease to exist.

Nutrition and physical exercise are only part of a system of human needs which impacts the overall physical and emotional condition of a person’s health. Love and interpersonal relationships are just as important to consider, nurture and develop as without love and relationships the human frame and spirit can develop various physical and psychological illnesses and diseases. Spiritual teacher and mystic Osho supported this so eloquently when he said, “Just as food is needed for the body, love is needed for the soul.”

Often people focus solely on specific areas of their lives such as their career while excluding important biological and psychological needs such as love. Over time, missing elements essential to life will eventually manifest in ways that will impact the overall quality of life and health of a person. As a holistic nutritionist, I work with people to identify these missing elements from their lives. I then help them focus on creating body, mind and soul balance that can increase happiness, good health, productivity and energy as well as prevent disease.  “Our daily existence requires both closeness and distance, the wholeness of self, the wholeness of intimacy,” said Judith Viorst author, newspaper journalist, and psychoanalysis researcher. “We reconcile oneness and separateness through ordinary earthbound human love.”

But love and interpersonal relationships are also very complex and considerably more complicated today than what previous generations have experienced. Just as a healthy positive loving relationship plays a key role in maintaining good health, the opposite effect on one’s health can occur for people in negative and dysfunctional relationships.  “If only one could tell true love from false love as one can tell mushrooms from toadstools,” said writer Katherine Mansfield. We would all be saved from a lot of heartache and emotional stress and live much happier and healthier lives. John Lennon once stated, “Love is like a plant. You can’t just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it’s going to get on by itself. You’ve got to keep watering it.” Without conscious attention and nourishment, love and relationships cannot continue to grow.

Many spiritual masters concur that relationships are mirrors of ourselves. It is often through the eyes of a beloved person that people are able to learn and grow. According to spiritual teacher Marianne Williamson, “Relationships are assignments. They are part of a vast plan for our enlightenment, the Holy Spirit’s blueprint by which each individual soul is led to greater awareness and expanded love.”  Within a trusting, respectful, and committed relationship that is based on true unconditional love, people have the opportunity and the freedom to explore the many possibilities that life has to offer both as individuals and as a partnership. “I think the reason people seek romance is that they want to step into the field of infinite possibilities with someone,” stated medical doctor and writer Deepak Chopra. “They want to share the experience of another world in which two people share the unknown together.”

There is no denying the impact of love on a person’s physical and emotional health. Love is as essential as food and water.

What is Love?

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous;
Love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly;
It does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails.
— 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
